Meet the Artist
Hey y'all! I'm Katie and I'm a small batch creator of handmade polymer clay jewelry and accessories located in the beautiful city of Charleston, SC.
How did I start?
There was a local polymer clay artist that frequented Frothy Beard Brewery and I loved buying her pieces. My husband got a wild hare to buy me polymer clay supplies in Christmas 2021 because he thought I would have fun creating my own jewelry. I had already started dabbling in beaded jewelry, so he thought this was the natural next step. Boy was he right!! I made over 400 pairs of earrings and started running out of friends and family to give them to, so I decided to take a leap and try selling some of my pieces.
Why the name?
When I started thinking of a name for my business, I thought of my parents. Blackbird by the Beatles is my mom’s favorite song and I danced to Tom Petty’s Wildflowers for my father daughter dance at my wedding. Family is really important, so it only seemed right to have Blackbirds & Wildflowers as the name of my passion project.
How quickly do I put out new collections?
I have a full time job and make jewelry on the side as my passion project while renovating our fixer upper, so speed and time are not my friends. I do my best with the time that I have, but I still have to make sure that I have work-life balance and spend time with my family (my dogs Zoe and Layla would heavily agree with this statement).
What makes my jewelry special?
Me, of course! Besides having my specific tastes and unique vision, I have one special collection that hits close to home - my Charleston Pluff Mud jewelry. I mix a little local pluff mud in all of those pieces to get the unique gray color. This is a strenuous process because it takes me way longer to condition the pluff mud clay. I am the first person using pluff mud in polymer clay jewelry, so you won't find these anywhere else. Now that you know a little bit about me and the creation process, take a look and pick something that you love!
